Isaiah 66:1-2, Thus says the LORD,
“Heaven is My throne and the earth is My footstool.
Where then is a house you could build for Me?
And where is a place that I may rest?
For My hand made all these things,
Thus all these things came into being,” declares the Lord.
“But to this one I will look,
To him who is humble and contrite of spirit, and who trembles at My word.”
God is ontologically transcendent. He is beyond measurement, containment, and comprehension. In short, God is BIG.
As the BIG God, He suffers no rivals. It is not the one who raises himself up who will receive His notice (except for a needed and swift quashing) but instead the one who makes himself nothing (cf. Philippians 2). God’s man looks like this:
- Humble (lowly)
- Contrite (broken; quick to confess and repent)
- Trembling before God (appropriately reverent)
The eyes of the Sovereign Lord watch continually over His little people everywhere. Isn’t that good to know?
